Evie’s Pediatrician called me on our way out of town Thursday. The blood work-up and urinalysis had come back. Not good news this time.
Bacteria has grown in the urine culture.
Those who have had urinary tract infections know that they are a beast! Poor baby! Explains why she’s been so miserable recently!
“OK, we can do this” I thought. Treat with an antibiotic and get over it.
“I need to be honest with you” the Dr. said. “This is concerning because we don’t see UTI’s a lot in babies. When we do, we have to ask why”.
There is concern that there could be kidney disfunction which has caused this. Our Pediatrician gave us the green light to go on our family vacation, put Evie on an antibiotic and said she wants to run some tests as soon as we get back next week. She has been a wonderful advocate for Evie and I feel so blessed to have such a Godly, loving woman as our Pediatrician.
There was more hard news…
We talked for a long time and she said she would like to do some genetic screening. When you or I get sick, we work through it and get over it. With Evie, it takes her spiraling down and usually requires oxygen, lasix, steroids and a long time to heal. The Dr. wants to do some screening to look for metabolic and/or possible auto immune disorders.
My poor girl. Next week, I want to be baking Christmas cookies and trying on her angel wings for her little cherub role in the Christmas pageant…. not taking her to be stuck with more needles and poked and prodded. Evie will have a ultrasound of her kidneys and a catheterization procedure next Tuesday. We are trying to get a meeting with the geneticist set up before the end of the year.
Would you again put our little angel in your prayers as God lays her on your heart?

Is this beginning to sound repetitive to anyone else?
Evie has again been the object of concern the last few days.
Day 4 with the stomach flu, vomiting, diarrhea, the whole nine yards, I became worried she was dehydrated. She was listless, cuddly and overall miserable. Passivity in general is contradictory to Evie’s nature…she is a fighter.
She always has been.
I remember commenting last year at the end of pregnancy that she was my most active baby as she did cartwheels inside of me. She even outmatched the twins whom I remember having knock-down drag-out in utero, jockeying for “firstborn” position. No, Evie is by far my toughest which is how she’s survived and endured all that she has.
The last two days, Evie’s lethargy worried me. She was refusing to eat, couldn’t keep feeds down and wasn’t having sufficient diapers. She almost fell asleep as her Pediatrician examined her yesterday. Typically Evie would be teething on the stethoscope. She had lost a couple of ounces that we have worked so hard to gain.
The doctor felt she was a bit dehydrated but that the risk of exposure to further infections in the hospital did not outweigh the benefit of having her on IV fluids. We were sent to a clinic for a blood work-up and urinalysis. Because of dehydration, getting a veinous line in was especially difficult and it took several sticks. Poor girl! We’ve been pushing fluids, Pedialyte and formula drop-by-drop through a syringe trying to increase her intake.
This morning I feel like we’re getting our girl back. She tires easily, but has been more playful. She only woke up once throwing up last night, so hopefully we’ve turned a corner. What a trooper!

Its been an unforgettable Thanksgiving weekend to say the least.
Our memories to the tune of “Twelve days of Christmas”

On the first day of Christmas, the flu bug gave to me…
Twelve food aversions
Eleven late night wakings
Ten loads of laundry
Nine boxes of Kleenex
Eight re-runs of “Dora”
Seven crummy tummies
Six pack of sprite
Five sets of soiled-sheets
Four doses of fenagrin
Three hours at the doctor
Two am. bubble-baths
And a bottle of disinfectant bleach!
We have each sequentially come down with the bug. Its a bad one! I dont think Ill ever be able to stomach a blue popsicle again after Britain ate one and proceeded to regurgitate it in the same neon blue shade. Evie landed us in the doctors office for three hours yesterday from which we were sent to the hospital for an ECHO. She has a bit of fluid on her lungs again, so they are just watching her closely. She needed oxygen last night and is having trouble keeping down feeds, so please pray for little missy to stay hydrated and heal as well as the other “sick-ies” and their daddy who is currently en-route to Ukraine.
So much to be thankful for! Happier moments on Thursday….before the turkey hit our tummies…
