The Sukhothai Sunday Brunch Review

Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Nothing says “relaxing Sunday” quite like a slow start and then a lavish brunch at a swanky hotel sipping champagne and listening to live jazz.

With Thai Mothers Day approaching soon, we have an exceptional recommendation to treat the family to an upscale unlimited brunch that will include all her favorites and spare her a day of toil and prep slaving over a hot stove herself!  Whisk her away to enjoy the legendary Sunday Brunch at The Colonnade, The Sukhothai Bangkok!  From 12:00-3:00 every Sunday, the Colonnade restaurant welcomes its guests for an unforgettable culinary experience!

Luxury from the moment you set foot in the hotel and can hear the strains of stringed instruments and live piano and drums accompanying the talented American jazz diva Coco Rouzier who entertains guests throughout the course of the afternoon with her charming, engaging personality and intoxicating voice.  The glittering ice sculpture, fine china, foreign wine selection and professionalism of staff are the first impressions that lay the foundation for a gloriously opulent brunch!

Tables are laden with refreshing chilled eucalyptus cloths and a lemon wedge water bowl serves as hand-cleansing between courses. Tables are promptly cleared and new dishes and silverware are seamlessly laid out between courses as you frequent the buffet tables.  Spring for the drink package which includes exceptional red, white and sparkling wines that pair beautifully with the food, catering to every palate!

Mix your own baby spinach, bacon, cheese, croutons and homemade caesar dressing in a massive carved out parmesan wheel.  French sausages, Parma ham, foie gras, cured salmon and grilled raclette cheese make this a rival salad bar to any other you’ve ever visited!  Seasonal vegetables and a wide selection of rolls, breads and baguettes make for a great first course!

You’ll find the most extensive cheese spread you’ve ever seen hiding on the back side of the dessert bar in an adjacent room, but lucky for us, we found it early and feasted on vast varieties of bries, bleu cheeses, goat cheese spreads, camembert, and parmesan wedges as our appetizers.  Pair with a hot soup for a great start.  Selections of lobster bisque (freshly prepared to order) and wild mushroom soup are tasty sensations boasting the freshest and richest of ingredients! Count calories tomorrow….today we eat and enjoy!

The seafood enthusiast will be in heaven with table after table spread with imported and local favorites.  French oysters on the half shell, giant river prawns, grilled scallops, lobster, crab and salmon.  For carnivores preferring other variety, you’ll not be at a loss for choices.  The roasted wagyu prime rib carving station was cleaned out by the last 30 minutes of the buffet due to the popular demand of this mouth-watering specialty.  Pork porchetta, lamb chops and beef ribs are succulent alternatives.

Popular Thai dish favorites make The Sukhothai Sunday brunch a favorite among the locals as well!  Curries, cashew shrimp and chicken in pandan leaf guarantee your out of town guests get to sample traditional Thai favorites with mind at ease that they’ve been prepared safely, authentically and deliciously!

Id be amis to not mention the made-to-order pasta station with creme, pesto and tomato sauce options and a noodle and pasta selection.  Mix ins like garlic, onion, ham, bacon and mushrooms make this a customized treat to tickle your own personal fancy.  Add a shaving of black truffle and sprinkling of parmesan for an irresistible carb coma!

For anyone who has ever visited The Sukhothai for the legendary Chocolate Buffet or high tea, you’ll be pleased to find some of your familiar favorites alluring you to the dessert spread.  The sticky date pudding served warm with mouth-watering rich sauce is a treat not to be missed.  Desserts as pleasing to the eye as the mouth are decoratively laid out to feast your eyes on.  Macaroons, tarts, mini chocolate eclairs, homemade ice creams, pavlova, creme brûlée, cheesecake and of course more cheese means more than one visit to the dessert buffet.  And the tiramisu a la minute is to die for! Select your liqueur and Chef Laurent will whip up a made-to-order cup of coffee flavored satisfaction to satiate that sweet tooth!

The kids corner just within earshot of parents lingering over a final cup of tea or one more glass of champagne, allow the baby brunchers to run off some steam in a play space equipped with fun activities and staffed by wonderful care takers. Your little tyke can get their face painted and do arts and crafts or watch a movie while they rest of their sugar high if they’ve gotten to pile their plate with cookies and ice cream.

Our highest recommendation for special occasions, visiting guests and culinary enthusiasts!

Rockin Jump Review

Friday, June 16, 2017
Its the day we’ve all been waiting for!  SCHOOLS OUT!!  And chances are, after about three-and-a-half hours, you’ll be going stir crazy at home and counting down until school starts again.  Not to worry….we’ve got suggestions to keep your littles entertained and your sanity intact!
Things to do with the Kids out of School….Here’s one of our favorites….

Rockin Jump

Options to beat the heat are a major selling point in our book.  Its just too hot to do much outside in Bangkok, and yet you need to burn off that energy somewhere!  Rockin Jump is a the perfect outlet for little ones needing to run wild and mommas needing to sip a diet coke in the blessed air conditioning!

A massive indoor trampoline park makes up this great urban playground for kids.  Perfect entertainment for your little ones “bouncing off the walls” to your teens needing an alternative to the Nintendo!  Purchase a pass and let them jump to their hearts content!  Sections include a dodge ball zone for interactive play with other bouncers, a runway (supervised by staff) for launching yourself into a giant foam pit, a basketball court perfect for dunk competitions and free space for the aspiring gymnast to turn cartwheels!  Guaranteed, you’ll have no arguments at bedtime – little ones will be worn out after a couple hours at Rockin Jump.

Also recommended for group functions.  Leaving this summer? Plan a family friendly going away party or corporate event!  Perfect for birthday parties.

Divana Spa Review

Monday, June 12, 2017

I consider myself somewhat of an expert when it comes to massages and spas.  Living 5 years in South East Asia and sampling the best Balinese deep tissue massage on a birthday trip to Indonesia and experiencing Thai massage at some of Bangkok’s most renowned establishments, I always enjoy it, but perhaps have become a bit of a massage snob!  There are usually elements I critique and improvements that can be made or service that is sub-par.
Usually!

….not so with our experience at Divana Spa!  My husband and I left exclaiming it was “the best massage we’d ever had”.  (and he does not impress easily!)  They have raised the bar in all aspects; customer service, quality for money and luxury of treatment.

With nearly 10 locations to their name, Divana keeps expanding but is un-compromised in their commitment to quality and excellence!  Their newest establishment, the “Nurture Spa” is located in the heart of Asok.  With shuttle service directly from the BTS, your every need is catered to and you can relax from the moment you step into the spa tuk tuk.  Tucked away from the hub-bub of the area, you’ll find a converted old Thai residential home that has been beautifully renovated in classic Thai style as an oasis, combining elements of light, water and nature to create a sensory exhilarating experience that will relax both mind and body.  You’ll find the lotus flower (a symbol of longevity and youth) incorporated subtly throughout the decor, the scents and the treatments.

En suite bathrooms offer guests every comfort and personal privacy.  14 double rooms and 2 tripe rooms make up an extensive spa offering 34 beds, each with modern amenities and individual steam room/showers.  Staff is exceptionally trained and clearly have undergone a vetting process ensuring guests receive treatments provided only by qualified professionals.

We opted for the Longevity Phikat Bua half-day treatment making our visit more of a “retreat” than just a massage.  Unhurried, we were pampered and polished, scrubbed and massaged, reminded to slow down, to breathe a little deeper, to tune out the busyness of life, to enjoy the moment and to rest!  Exfoliation and collagen gel hot compress rendered me completely relaxed and the steam room was invigorating.  Half way through our treatments, we were offered tea and refreshments and Im not going to lie, sleep found me half way through the last portion of the oil thai massage and hot stone therapy.  Alas, all things must come to an end and the reality that I have seven little ones waiting for me to come home and fix dinner meant our visit had to end.  However, a little slice of heaven came home with my by way of Divana’s signature scent collection.  Products on sale following your treatment allow you to pocket a bit of pampering for later!

This is the spot to request a gift-certificate to for your next birthday or Mother’s Day.
