Hot Wheels Pizza Review Bangkok Thailand

Saturday, April 22, 2017

Velcro, Coca-cola and Penicillin have all been monumental inventions born of frustration or accident.  And Bangkok has its own history-in-the-making by way of a pizza shop raising the bar after the owner discovered this city sadly lacking in authentic Italian-inspired pizza.

My husband first tasted Hot Wheels for a casual weekday lunch and came home raving that it “was the best pizza in Bangkok”.  His lofty claims were not unfounded and we made Hot Wheels our dining selection the next week for “date night” each polishing off our own pizza.  While the large would be an adequate portion to split, it was just too yummy to share!

The trademark wood burning oven is secret to that oh-so-perfect crust.  Quality ingredients and an extra generous sprinkle of cheese makes these a fierce rival to any other local pizza parlor.  On the menu, select from signature favorites or build your own customized creation with meats imported from Italy, cheeses and local fresh vegetables available to make a mouthwatering masterpiece!  And what makes Hot Wheels even more amazing is that this outfit is mobile!  “Hot Wheels” for which it is named, operates out of a fully functional truck with oven, chef, ingredients and talent all serving up a slice of awesomeness by way of Napoli Pizzas.

Hot Wheels delivers, and to friends of this blog, Hot Wheels is offering free delivery on the first order!!  Just mention “Best of Bangkok” when you place your order.  A great alternative to generic pizza chains, Hot Wheels can cater to parties, gatherings, or just family Friday-night movie marathons as we enjoyed this week!

And when you’ve satisfied your savory craving, make sure you save room to satiate that sweet tooth.  The Nutella Star with Mascarpone cheese, bananas and hazelnut spread may not be a classic pizza recipe, but its a sinfully sweet end to a perfect pizza party!

Lemon Bakery Review – Bangkok Thailand

Saturday, April 8, 2017

Anyone who has spent any length of time in Thailand has experienced epidemic of inedible cakes here!  Sweet temptations behind glass fronts in bakeries tempt us with frosting flourishes and edible embellishments, but one has only to cut and taste to realize that “not all that glitters is gold!”
While the cakes may look the same, one typically discovers that ingredients used in most Thai bakeries and kitchens are very different than the standard we would hold for dessert delicacies in the west.  There is nothing more unappealing than partaking of a bite only to realize that instead of smooth buttercream, your mouth is filled with an oily, overly sweetened shortening substance!  All too often, that has been my experience with every dessert here.

So began my search for “the perfect cake” for my husbands 40th birthday!  Due to the fact that I dont have an oven that works, I laid aside my apron and started scouring the internet.  Lemon came recommended by a friend and my intrigue only grew as I talked to Shweta who fielded all my questions and graciously accommodated date and time and location changes last minute, delivering to us a perfectly scrumptious carrot cake – Chad’s favorite!!

The taste was undeniably different than my disappointing debut with Thai desserts months before. While quality of ingredients (OMG!! the cream cheese frosting was to die for!!!) left my palate profoundly satisfied, she didnt compromise in the least in presentation and decor!  My husbands 40th birthday “still young at heart” themed cake tastefully incorporated his favorite pastime, (surfing,) into a stunning beach-themed layered cake.

Well this one takes the cake!!  Moist, beautifully blended flavors, quality ingredients, exquisite decorations and superb customer services guarantees we will be ordering from Lemon again in the future.  And with as many family birthdays as we celebrate, I anticipate we’ll be keeping Shweta very, very busy!

Slappy Cakes Review – Best of Bangkok

Monday, March 27, 2017

Pancakes were synonymous with birthdays at our house growing up.  My sweet daddy would take us out on a birthday date to the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) and order us their funny face pancake all doctored up with chocolate chips and a whipped cream smiley face.   We’ve worked to recreate fun memories and make traditions with our own children now a few decades later and on the other side of the world, but until now, have come up short in the pancake department.

Delighted we were to find Slappy Cakes – a family-friendly, quaint, relaxed restaurant that specializes in a weekend favorite at our house – pancakes.  Every parent of small children has experienced the frustration of ordering, and then waiting and trying to keep kiddos entertained while your meal is being prepared.  Slappy Cakes provides little aspiring chefs entertainment and work experience with their “make your own breakfast” option.  Tables outfitted with griddles in the center are a wonderful solution to keep little hands busy (and the mess out of your own kitchen!).

We ordered two of the big combo breakfasts (each serves about 3-4 people).  The set comes with three bottles of batter (in mess-free squeezable containers) and all the trimmings and toppings; nutella, whipped cream, ice cream, strawberries, bananas, almonds and the like.  The kids loved squirting their own pancake shapes and making faces with the various flavors of batter then decorating with all the accoutrements.

You’ll find that rather than rushing through the meal and your kids being done and ready to move onto your weekend agenda before you get to taste your own treat, your kiddos instead will be the ones lingering and begging to make “just one more” sweet sensation.  And for those inclined toward savory instead of sweet, there are heartier breakfast options like Eggs Benedict to tempt your tastebuds.

A full menu is at your fingertips, but you’ll be amiss to not experience the tabletop cooking station, so grill up some pancakes and slather on some toppings for a fun interactive mealtime option!

And we’d venture to say that this spot would not be nearly as fun without a kid or two in tow.  Definitely one for the whole family!!  With easy access to Phrom Phong BTS, this makes for a great weekend morning family excursion!
